Bicycling Balloon Girl

Photo expeditions throughout the Los Angeles area are a blast. Searching out the odd, quirky, and unusual is not too difficult, considering I’ve pegged it “the world in a handbasket”. It’s truly a fascinating place!

Recently Kat and I were photographing on the Westside, heading homeward, when I chose a random route through Hollywood towards the 101. Traffic was pretty crazy. Well, when isn’t it crazy in Hollywood, but this day was particularly crazy. But, it’s then that I spotted her… Bicycling Balloon Girl! Spectacular! Intriguing! Fascinating! She was all of it, all at once!

I’d recently attended a street photography workshop called The 24 Hour Project at KPCC’s Crawford Family Forum in Pasadena, met some of the big names in that genre of photography, and become hooked. Now here I was, face to face (read little pickup truck to bicycle) with a wonderful subject. The chase began. I made Kat jump by hollering “grab my camera, get her, get her” while trying to avoid crashing, explaining my urgency in the subject matter, and fending off Kat’s insistence that for sure the girl would see us. Fear to the wind, Kat clicked away… and we followed the girl block after block after block!

By this time, Kat was beginning to panic, certain we’d be arrested for stalking. Oh dear, hadn’t thought about that. Well, we weren’t! Instead, we have memories of craziness, my thankfully good driving skills, and some great photos by Kat to boot! ~SueBee
