Taste of New Orleans, part 4, La Fayette Cemetery No. 1

(31 photos) Exploring the Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 in the New Orleans Garden District, I was enthralled by the history, the tombs, the names… it was quite unlike anything here in Southern California. I found the cemetery a bit eerie at times, with the clouds casting odd shadows, a homeless man with a very sad story approaching for money a few times, me rushing to catch up with the few other visitors walking around. It was surprising to see so many German names, so I looked up the history and found New Orleans had quite a large Irish and German immigrant population at one time. I loved this cemetery and took tons of photos too…so peaceful and beautifully sad…

  So unlike what we have out here, flat stones that can be mowed over with ride-on lawn mowers. I’m glad my family is with the ocean! ❤

It is such a beautiful cemetery. I am oddly fascinated by the peace you find in cemeteries, reading epitaphs and imagining lives of people long gone.
