I spent a lovely day in Wichita late last week and visited Botanica, of which I’m a proud member. The steadfast gardeners there have changed out many of the plantings with autumn in mind. One very interesting observation, though, was all the damage done to the giant lily pads by the hailstorm from the previous day. I didn’t have any part of the storm in Hutchinson, a mere 50 miles to the northwest, but it was clear Wichita had plenty. I noticed while driving in the neighborhood surrounding Botanica that an incredible amount of leaves and branches were in the streets, yards, and sidewalks. People were out with rakes and trash cans trying to get a handle on the cleanup. I felt very lucky for my neighborhood but sorry for theirs. ~SueBee
