After getting my second Covid vaccine early this past week, and having no side effects, I decided to keep the camping reservation I’d made at Anza-Borrego State Park. My main purpose, other than a change of scenery, was to test out sleeping in my car for future camping trips. Note, I’m not keen on tent camping at my age for several reasons: safety, sleeping on the ground, time needed for set-up and take-down. I’d purchased my Subaru Crosstrek with the idea in mind of car camping, and I’ve decided it’s going to be very workable.
The Anza-Borrego campground is well-maintained and definitely feels safe; park rangers patrol often. The campsites are spread out so social distancing wasn’t even an issue, the restroom facilities are clean and maintained, there’s a covered picnic table, and fresh water at each site. What more could a person ask for? Affordability is what! The campsite was just $25 per night… that beats any hotel room I’d care to stay in, by a long shot! A bonus to this trip was meeting another single lady, also doubly vaccinated, who was camping in the next spot. She and I hit it off and did some great hikes together. I know we’ll meet up one day again, at some other campsite!
By the way, the state park is part of the International Dark-Sky Association. I chose not to start a campfire because I wanted to look at the stars. Unfortunately, my timing was off… there was a very bright full moon! Still, the light from the moon lent a wonderful atmosphere to the surrounding mountains, and allowed me to wander around without a flashlight. ~SueBee
