I decided rather spur of the moment yesterday to take a drive to Wilson Lake, a Kansas State Park. I pulled a quick lunch together and headed out, choosing to take the freeways from Hutchinson via Salina, and figured I’d return home on the back roads. I made really good time and enjoyed the scenery along the 126 miles to the lake. Remembering the vast wind farms back in Southern California near Palm Springs, I was intrigued seeing so many of the giant whirligigs as I approached my exit. It definitely gets windy here, so they’re most likely generating lots of power.
Once I entered the state park, I found the fee booth unattended and the campgrounds empty, with just a car or two scattered around the entire area. Something that fascinated me to no end as I walked around, was watching sheets of ice blow up to the shoreline, breaking into smaller pieces, and even into pebble size bits. It truly wasn’t that cold, in spite of the blowing wind, although my vest and fuzzy hat were a definite must as I took pictures. I can’t wait to go back, and maybe I’ll even reserve a cabin for an extended stay. It must look extra pretty once everything is green again. ~SueBee

It looks well worth a return visit.
