I visited the nearby farming village of Yoder, Kansas, for their Heritage Day this past Saturday, and was so glad I did. Yoder, and the surrounding area, is home to about 165 people. Since its founding in 1906, it’s been the hub of the local Amish community, as per their website.
Arriving fairly early morning, I parked in a plowed field, and was given a ride to the activities on a horse-drawn wagon. An adorable eight week old colt was hitched alongside, learning the ropes from its mom. I wandered around, looking at all the baked goods, handmade quilts, and crafts on offer, watched various games being played, and generally enjoyed seeing all the local families so clearly excited for their annual event. I couldn’t resist buying a plate of homemade oatmeal raisin cookies, then found a shady spot and had my first experience watching a true country parade. Seeing all the children scampering after the candies being tossed from each parade entry was such fun! Please enjoy the pictures in today’s gallery, with parts 2 and 3 coming soon. ~SueBee

It does look like a very good day out.
I’m enjoying seeing country life after living in a big city most of my nearly 70 years.
