I went on an overnight trip exploring the Flint Hills region of central Kansas, and several of the adorable small towns there. Yesterday, leaving Cottonwood Falls and on my way home, I decided to take a small back road. I’d been seeing smoke plumes in various places on the prairie during my two days out and about, and assumed controlled burns were going on. Indeed, they were. While I was heading west, a guy on a small, motorized vehicle drove east toward me with a flame thrower! As I pulled to a stop, he motioned for me to continue along. He lit the dry grass alongside the road, the fire burned about 12 feet of dry grass and then extinguished itself. The cattle on the other side of the road didn’t seem to mind in the least. Fascinating! ~SueBee

That would make me a bit nervous.
It was a bit disconcerting! I could feel the heat from the fire as I drove quickly past.
