Bowl-ing

A summer in the southland just isn’t complete without Bowl-ing, Hollywood Bowl-ing, that is! While the orchestra, band, singers or dancers may be the reason tickets are sold, it’s the atmosphere and pre-show picnic people look forward to nearly as much as whichever main event. Bowl dining has become as famous as the bowl itself.

Box seat patrons may bring their crystal wine glasses, silver candelabra, and butlers, but the set-up is no less elaborate along the walkways or in the picnic areas. Some of the prep-time and expense would be mind-boggling, I’m sure, if anyone would admit to what they spent on each. But, no matter, it’s Bowl season, So Cal’s own extended Derby Day, and we’re not about to be out-done.

It seems our beloved Bowl is nearing its 100 year birthday, according to the Bowl website: “1920, first community events held in Daisy Dell in Bolton Canyon; site first referred to as “Hollywood Bowl;” Hollywood May Festival marks the first Hollywood Bowl program to charge admission.” I’m guessing the originators would be pleased by how their creation has evolved, regardless of nose bleed seats or box.

Speaking of seating, I’ve personally always loved the “nose bleed” seats, those cheap seats way up top. The view is spectacular, the patrons relaxed, the wine freely flowing. An extra advantage is in wearing off the calorie-laden picnic during the hike to our reserved seats.

While a seat cushion isn’t a bad companion, and a jacket or thin blanket not a bad idea on chilly evenings, I’ve roughed it on numerous occasions and found the experience no less memorable.

If you haven’t visited yet, or if it’s been a few years, I highly recommend you go – doesn’t matter what’s playing, everything at the Bowl is fantastic.
