As you may have noticed in Part 1 or Part 2, Oak Glen is a must-visit kind of place during the springtime. Particularly if you’re a Southern California resident who has grown weary of freeway gridlock, tract housing, crowds, and the heat! While the temperature wasn’t really any cooler than at home, being surrounded by lush vegetation brought a wonderful respite.
Once I’d walked a few of the nature trails, lunchtime was calling me. I drove down the road just a bit to one of my favorite taverns, Hawk’s Head, set in the Revolutionary War era. The corn chowder was perfect, even on a hot day. I paired it with a blackberry pear hard cider served in a frosty pewter mug. The proprietor’s very moving poetry reading of In Flanders Field, for the occasion of Memorial Day, added to the atmosphere. As I left the mountain and drove home, I resolved to return in the very near future. ~SueBee (photos by SueBee)
The proprietor reading poetry is not something we would encounter round here.
