My immediate choice for this Weekly Photo Challenge: Inspiration is…. rocks! I’m inspired by rocks. Some might think I have rocks in my head, considering my current obsession… and perhaps I do. They’re everywhere in my home at the moment: au naturale, painted, stacked.
During my recent vacation to Cambria, just a few days after receiving my breast cancer diagnosis, I found great peace and serenity in searching for, and collecting, rocks. The waves often caught me unaware, adding giddy delight. Two locales along the coast became goldmines for my search, Moonstone Beach in Cambria, and further up the way, near the pier at San Simeon. I lugged a canvas bag that became heavier and heavier… causing me to feel completely silly, and wonderful! Talk about therapy for the mind, and body… there you have it, rocks. Paint them, stack them, enjoy their various colors, shapes, textures (some still rough, others smooth as glass), dream up words to paint onto them, meditate with them…
Once, while visiting a little ocean-themed shop in town, I noticed glass test tubes for sale. Yes, those used by lab scientists! A note was attached to the display stating the test tubes were intended to hold tiny pieces of sea glass, and wee little pebbles, all worn smooth by the waves, to be collected at Moonstone Beach. While I chose not to buy any test tubes, my next seaside foraging tour had me joining other consumed nuts, sitting among endless, countless pebbles, thoughtfully back far enough that I wouldn’t become drenched by the larger waves. Realizing after a very short time, that my new-found therapy could become a problem, I tore myself up off the sand and retreated back to my camera and further exploration of the area.
In reviewing photos for this post, I found several stacked-rock pictures from visits to various favorite spots in Southern California. It seems I’ve been interested in rocks for some time. Regardless, I highly recommend a visit to your nearest rocky shore, and don’t forget your canvas bag! ~SueBee
