(15 photos) December 31 2016 was a rainy day in Southern California, a nice end to a mostly miserable year. Personally, I enjoy overcast, chilly days at the beach, so when the rain took a pause, I hopped in my little truck and headed to Balboa Island. I parked and walked onto the ferry for a ride over to the Newport Beach peninsula. Climbing the sand berm, boots sinking in, I moved nearer the water where the sand is firmer but certainly requires attentiveness, not my strong suit. I searched for a stick, found one of bamboo, and started inscribing names of those family members we lost this past year. Sadness. Reflecting a moment, the names washed out to sea… a few more attempts and I snapped the picture you’ll see in this gallery. I wandered along to just below the pier, took a selfie with my iPhone, and climbed back up the berm. Along the pier, topside, I snapped a few shots of the goings-on with my Nikon, took the ferry back to the island, and headed up the coast to my favorite seafood restaurant in Seal Beach. A window table, rain pouring down, nice glass of wine and a wonderful meal… I found this to be a perfectly fitting way to end 2016. ~SueBee
