The weather couldn’t have been better for a bit of kayaking off Avalon on Catalina Island. I rented my kayak from the Descanso Beach Club. I prefer renting there as I can paddle off from the beach (albeit a very rocky beach) rather than from a dock in the harbor where it’s difficult to get back out of the kayak afterwards.
Several people were out on the water so I didn’t hesitate going up the coast a ways. Although, I learned from last year when Kat and I double-kayaked really far up the coast, oblivious that we needed to make the same paddle back, against current. That was exhausting! So, this time I carefully gauged how far I was going and turned around at a nice comfortable distance.
As I returned to the Beach Club, a worker on shore waved me in. I paddled in on a wave, he grabbed the kayak, pulled me onto the rocky shore, and the paddle started floating off… so as he grabbed for that, I managed to climb out myself, another wave came up, toppled me over and I was drenched! It was pretty funny to see I’m sure, I felt very ungraceful, but so cooled off! And that was a highlight of my 65th birthday celebration – the perfect way to usher in another year!! ~SueBee
It looks idyllic.
It truly is!
