I completed a new journal just in time for Mother’s Day. It’s dedicated to my mom and grandma, both of who lived to be nearly 100. I named it ‘Susie Homemaker; my grandma always called me Susie. I was inspired to make it after realizing the bulk of my hours during this Coronavirus (Covid19) lockdown have been spent cooking, eating, and sewing!
The journal is filled with recipes and sewing ephemera that belonged to my mom. She had a wooden recipe box, now in my care, that was given her by the landlady of the house she and my dad first rented after they were married in 1943. The recipe box is packed full with goodies and I had lots of fun including many of them in this journal. If the items were fragile, I scanned and printed them out. Otherwise, I tucked in the originals.
The 9″ x 6″ journal has three signatures (sets of pages). I stitched each signature together and then stitched each to the spine so I could thread through the buttons without all the pages falling apart. That system proved successful. It’s the first time I’ve used buttons on the spine (not my original idea) and I really like how they highlight the theme of this book. The buttons are from my mom’s sewing box. The pictures on the cover are also ones my mom had. ~SueBee
