“Haunted”

Haunted House - Santa AnaDriving late evening in a light, misty rain that made everything drip and headlights glare off the pavement, it occurred to me that yet again time got away from me. Although, I couldn’t quite wrap my head around how it got late, and dark, so fast. Somewhat new to Orange County, I’d been checking out part of a nearby town I’d seen on the map. I was curious about the area. It had some old homes and historical features I’d read about, as well as a lingering, unsolved murder mystery. Intriguing no doubt! But, my stomach let me know it was well past dinnertime so I figured on heading homeward. Besides, who in their right mind is driving aimlessly around in this weather? Why is it suddenly darker? Where are the streetlights anyway?

I obviously wasn’t paying attention to the road as I should have been, hopelessly trying to avoid some nasty potholes and overhanging branches, when the road turned abruptly. I pressed the brakes and rather slipped to a stop directly in front of a vine covered gate, guarding what looked like an old, two story house behind. Whoa. That was lucky I thought, and yet odd at the same time. I tried peering through the rain splattered windows of my little pickup truck, cursing myself for not having newer wiper blades. There were small, yellowish lights heading off behind the gate, and what looked like figures, moving with the lights. I don’t know why they hypnotized me so, but I had the hardest time looking away… when one seemed to beckon me, then came nearer… and nearer. What the heck? This was all too bizarre. I shivered, jammed the gear in reverse, jerked it into drive, and scooted off down the street.

On another day I returned to the area, hoping to see if daylight revealed anything, but mostly determined to bring my imagination back to reality. Today’s Foto Fix, taken in Santa Ana, is of the house and vine covered gate I may have stopped at that dark, dreary night. ~SueBee, Pic by SueBee (Happy Halloween!)
