Kat and I headed out to San Bernardino County two weeks ago, inspired by a friend’s post on Facebook. Within an hour’s drive, we arrived in paradise! Yes, the mountain village of Oak Glen, an apple growing center of Southern California, up the mountainside above Yucaipa. I can’t believe I’ve lived so many years in Southern California without knowing about it. We’re making up for lost time, though, as I already drove back again the following day, and Kat this past Saturday, showing it off to her boyfriend. I think we’re all determined to catch as much autumn color as possible before it falls to winter!
Oak Glen offers so much to see and do, which of course means gobs of photos, so we’re splitting up into separate articles. Here’s a little introductory tour to whet your appetite, although I realize that’s already been done with our “Eat Here! (Apple Annie’s)” article, but this is for your outdoorsy appetite!
I think a little hayride around Rileys at Los Rios Rancho will get you in the mood…
We’ll stop in the store at Snow-Line for some fresh mini donuts – oh so incredibly delicious! You want a half dozen? Nahhh, let’s go for a full dozen! Grab some homemade cherry apple cider and we’ll be all set.
Oh, you need a little rest after your snack? How about plopping down beneath these trees for awhile while we gather up some energy for a walk into the Wildlands Conservancy.
Here we go hand-in-hand with nature, as pretty as it gets! Stay attentive, though, there’s a bobcat warning sign down along the trail. Nice kitty, nice kitty….
We’re back in time for some real country fiddlin’ and corn on the cob grilled to perfection!
Let’s grab a sack of apples from the general store and read about some upcoming events we surely don’t want to miss! Time to make your plans and head up the mountain. For those worried about driving windy, mountain roads – no need to fear. The road’s excellent and pretty much a straight shot up from Yucaipa, no looming cliffs or hairpin turns. ~SueBee (photos by SueBee and Kat)
I love the first photo too. The guy is just smiling all over his face! I admire a guy who enjoys his job! Chuckle. Beautiful photographs.
He was quite a character! Thanks so much 🙂
You have really made a beautiful portrait of Oak Glen. Awesome photographs, and my favourite is the first one.
Thanks so much! It’s my new favorite place… I’m going back again this weekend! ~SueBee
I can see why you made return trips! Cherry apple cider sounds interesting. Did you like it? I love the Currier & Ives sign!

The cherry apple cider was our favorite of samples so we bought that one. Oak Glen is quaint and beautiful!
