While visiting the Heritage Museum in Santa Ana, I overheard the tour guide talking about Walt Disney’s original garage studio, located in Garden Grove, being open for tours that day. As quite the Disney fan, I couldn’t resist! And talk about lucky timing…tours are only offered the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month! So, I zipped on over to the Stanley Ranch Museum & Historical Village, and awaited their next tour.
Having the opportunity to see where Disney got started was absolutely fascinating! Walt rented the garage from his uncle, originally located in Burbank. How the City of Garden Grove Historical Society came to own it is very interesting…turns out the building was offered to Disneyland and Walt Disney World, along with a multitude of museums including the Smithsonian…they all denied it. Thanks to a local police officer, the Garden Grove Historical Society was able to get its hands on it!
A local Disney fan club holds their meetings in the garage, and many members have nicely donated Disney memorabilia. I especially loved seeing the old movie camera!
It was a blast exploring the garage, and the Stanley Ranch Historical Village…more articles covering other areas of the village to come! ~Kat (pics by Kat)
