Patch Job

Kat and I visited downtown Los Angeles weekend before last. We got off the northbound 5 freeway at 7th Street, and headed across town via surface streets. We entered an industrial area with graffiti lined walls and fascinating old buildings. Noticing a photo shoot in progress, I pulled over and looked back. My eye was immediately captured by the patch work on the underside of this old bridge, though, rather than the model and photographer. Patch Job (1)First off, I wondered what value any sort of plaster patch offered to a bridge with that many cracks. Second, I wondered how the heck anyone managed to do that much patching upside down at such height. Then, I laughed to myself while imagining two separate crews doing the job. Notice the left side of the bridge (first photo below) has very minimal patching, while the right side (next two photos below) is nothing but patching!
