Exploring the Huntington, 4

Today’s post is the final installment of my wandering around the desert gardens at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. Springtime is by far the best time to visit this section; the colors and variety of blooms are phenomenal. Upcoming posts will feature my other favorite sections of the gardens… I […]

Exploring the Huntington, 2

Continuing from yesterday’s post, on into the desert at the Huntington we go! The fascinating array of plant life is mind-boggling, particularly in springtime when colorful flowers make their bold statement, “Look at Me, Look at Me”!! Be sure your face doesn’t get too close to that perky yellow flower, though, or you might end with a […]

Exploring the Huntington, 1

A week or two ago, I took a spontaneous day off work (that’s called playing hooky), and visited the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino. I became a member last year, when Stinky was on display (link to post here), and was overdue for another visit. The day was perfect, cool and overcast. […]

Moorten’s Botanical Garden, part 3

Part three of my 4-part series about an interesting desert garden in Palm Springs, Moorten’s Botanical Garden. As you’ll notice in this gallery of photos, the desert plants become tropical near the area where weddings are held. The area is green and lush, and must make a beautiful setting for that special occasion. ~SueBee

Moorten’s Botanical Garden, part 1

When I took a mini get-away to Palm Springs at the end of 2014, one of the places I found fascinating was Moorten’s Botanical Garden. I wrote about their world’s first Cactarium, and will now share scenes from their desert gardens. The afternoon was extremely pleasant, the temperatures on the cooler side (Southern California’s cool), […]

Visiting the World’s First Cactarium

An after-lunchtime visit to Moorten Botanical Garden was a nice break between hikes during my recent Palm Springs visit. Established in 1938, it’s a desert lover’s cactus feast. I found their World’s First Cactarium, pictured in this gallery, to be most fascinating, and I’m pleased to know I visited a world’s first! ~SueBee

Ready for Battle

This scene reminded me of the western movies I loved as a kid…. brave warriors, lined up, spears proudly held upright, each ready for battle, awaiting the command to attack…the spears then lowered and horses nudged into action. Today’s Foto Fix and story were created at the Los Angeles County Arboretum a week or so […]

Plants of Anza-Borrego

While camping in Anza-Borrego over the weekend for Cam’s birthday, I spotted lots of incredible plants! Cam and I stopped by the Visitor Center on the way home, and explored the little quarter mile nature trail, which is super neat, since all the plants are labeled! Took several pics here…and I picked up a new […]

Ouch and Other Desert Plants

After walking with White Crane the other day, I wandered off to the desert area of the Fullerton Arboretum, always a favorite spot. Remembering when Kat discovered a Hidden Heart, I was pleased with myself for spotting the heart shaped Ouch cactus in this photo: The plant below reminded me of Medusa’s hair, but thankfully […]
