This past Sunday morning, I headed up the 5 freeway from northern Orange County toward Los Angeles. My spontaneous destinations for the day were Travel Town in Griffith Park, followed by the Cherry Blossom Festival at Descanso Gardens in La Canada (future article).
My last visit to Travel Town was a few decades ago when I chaperoned an elementary school field trip. I discovered then, that riding herd on several dozen boisterous kids at a place like Travel Town can easily cause a person to sign up for an extended vacation someplace very, very quiet. I’ll never erase the memory of two boys leaning way out the train engine window, intent on climbing up top, while the other chaperones were obliviously chatting up a storm. After grabbing my heart back into my chest, hollaring until the boys got back inside and my voice became raspy, I resolved to sign up on every future field trip! I figured that way at least one person would be watching the kids.
Travel Town has endless photo opportunities, so of course I took hundreds. I therefore decided on more than one article; this one for the vehicles, trains next. If you’re in the Los Angeles area and get a chance, I recommend a visit to Travel Town. There’s no entry fee, you can take a picnic lunch and enjoy being surrounded by transportation history. ~SueBee (photos by SueBee)
